Our Nationwide Windscreen Policy covers the cost of having your windscreen or car glass replaced or repaired.

At some stage, most drivers will make a smaller claim on their motor insurance to cover broken glass, of which, windscreen damage is the most common.

Windscreen damage is usually sustained when objects and road debris, such as stones, gravel or other projectiles are thrown up by the tyres of another vehicle against your windscreen, causing chips or cracks.

There can be other causes of glass damage and stress cracks such as debris falling off trucks, hailstones, rapid change in temperature, poor manufacturing or installation.

Incidents like this, can, at the very least, cause inconvenience, and so having adequate windscreen cover is advisable. The windscreen policy will also cover damage to other glass on the vehicle, such as sunroofs, mirrors and lights.

The policy may also cover repair for scratches on the body work as a result of glass breakage.

The advantage of having windscreen cover is that it will not impact on your No-claims Bonus and generally you won’t have to pay any excess.

The Process

In some cases the windscreen will need to be replaced and our technicians will make a decision, based on the level of damage to the glass and decide if a replacement is needed. You will then be advised on a cost and time-frame, for the work to be carried out and completed.

The interior of the vehicle will need to be covered to protect the vehicle during the process, after which, the technicians will remove the glue that holds the windscreen in place. The highest quality bonding materials are used on the windscreen and all glass products will carry the E2 stamp and are per manufacturer’s standard.

Although our aim is to give the most competitive windscreen replacement cost, some windscreens will need to be totally replaced as opposed to a windscreen repair.

Ways To Mitigate Windscreen Damage

There are a number of steps you can take to minimise the chance of your windscreen cracking.

  1. Drive a safe distance behind other vehicles. This way, you can avoid having other vehicles driving gravel or pebbles from the road surface onto your vehicle. It will also lessen the chances of falling debris from the back of trucks.
  2. Never use boiling water to de-ice your windscreen in icy weather. Pouring hot water onto freezing cold glass will cause a rapid change in temperature that can lead to cracks. Always use a de-icer and scraper instead.
  3. Keep your car sheltered and out of the elements, if you can. This will help prevent damage from hailstones, direct sunlight.
  4. Don’t blast the air-conditioning at a max level. As with the boiling water example, this also can lead to extremes in temperature causing the windscreen to crack.
  5. Driving carefully will also help you to avoid accidents keeping both you and your windscreen safe from harm.
